Important Memo From the Chair on Na/K Stills (2/27/2009)
Members of the Chemistry Department,
As many of you know, a Na/K still caught fire on Tuesday evening. Fortunately, no one was hurt. It is Departmental policy -- and remains Departmental policy -- that these stills not be used. It is paramount that we learn from such incidents and become an increasingly safer department. If you have a Na/K still, it must be permanently dismantled. Similarly it is Departmental policy that mineral oil heating baths not be used. Replacement with sand baths or silicone oil baths is required in all labs.
