Lucky Eight: Four Energy Frontier Research Centers Funded in Illinois; Northwestern Associated with four more
28 April 2009 On April 27th, Darwin's birthday, the White House announced that 46 Energy Frontier Research Centers, funded at a total of $777 million over five years, will be established at universities, national laboratories, nonprofit organizations, and private firms. Four multi-million dollar centers were funded in the state of Illinois, two of which (Argonne-Northwestern Solar Energy Research Center, led by Mike Wasielewski, and the Center for Integrated Training in Far-From-Equilibrium and Adaptive Materials, led by Bartosz Grzybowski) are located at Northwestern, and two of which (the Institute for Atom-Efficient Chemical Transformations, led by Chris Marshall and the Center for Electrical Energy Storage: Tailored Interfaces, led by Mike Thackery) are located at Argonne National Lab. Northwestern faculty are associated with four more EFRC's, namely Oak Ridge's Fluid Interface Reactions, Structures and Transport Center, led by David Wesolowski, Michigan State University's Revolutionary Materials for Solid State Energy Conversion Center, led by Donald Morelli, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's Center for Inverse Design, led by Alex Zunger, and Sandia National Laboratory's Solid State Lighting Science Center, led by Jerry Simmons. |
