Mercouri Kanatzidis's recent induction into the National Academy of Sciences celebrates his outstanding contributions to original research. This esteemed membership is among the highest recognitions for scientists in the U.S. His election this year marks the 13th NAS member among the current chemistry department faculty.
A novel catalyst, derived from an affordable metal and ordinary table sugar, holds promise as a solution for utilizing captured carbon. In a recent study led by the Farha Group, this catalyst effectively converted CO2 into carbon monoxide (CO), a vital precursor for various chemical products. Moreover, in the presence of hydrogen, the reaction yields synthesis gas (syngas), a valuable fuel precursor.
Northwestern University is spearheading the Midwest Nuclear Direct Air Capture Hub (MINDAC), funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Administered by the Paula M. Trienens Institute for Sustainability and Energy, this initiative brings together diverse institutions to investigate using a zero-emission nuclear fleet to power CO2 removal from the atmosphere. Chemistry Department faculty Ted Sargent and Omar Farha join as co-principal investigators in this initiative to build a carbon capture hub in the Midwest.
