Facilities
Overview
The hub of Chemistry activity at Northwestern is the 750,000 square foot Technological Institute (Tech), one of the largest education and research buildings in the nation. This building houses the Chemistry department offices as well as several faculty members’ offices and lab space. It underwent a $125 million renovation in 1999.
Nearby are related facilities that offer specialized lab space and equipment to enable pioneering research. The Catalysis Center (CC) houses equipment for detailed study of catalytic reactions and surface science. The newest member of the family is the Patrick J. Ryan Building for Nanofabrication and Molecular Self-Assembly (Nano), which was completed in 2002. It stands as a symbol of Northwestern’s prominent position in the emerging field of nanoscience. For the materials and life sciences research, Cook Hall holds an impressive set of cutting-edge instruments.
